Following a heel injury, he decided to fix his uncomfortable army boots with a thinner and softer leather in addition to an air cushioned insole. This concept was re-adapted for commercial use in 1959 for factory worker's safety shoes. Dr Martens entered into the fashion world in the early '70s thanks to British pop rock music stars that couldn't get enough of the boot. A few years later, it was the punk movement that changed the face of Docs : more than comfortable shoes, they were now the shoe of rebellion.
